Most of today’s gaming laptops are built around the Intel CPU and the Nvidia GPU, or maybe the AMD CPU and the Nvidia GPU. AMD hasn’t produced competitive discrete GPUs for laptops in quite some time, so finding a complete solution from AMD is very rare. The Dell G5 15 SE is one of those portable devices, but it’s literally the only 2020 laptop to feature such a configuration. It is also the only laptop currently available that supports AMD’s SmartShift technology, which enables the laptop to dynamically distribute power between the CPU and GPU, depending on which component you need the most. This is the same technology that will also be used in the upcoming Sony PlayStation 5 game console.
This makes the Dell G5 15 SE (5505) special. The good news is that it is also relatively affordable, in terms of gaming laptops, with a starting price of Rs. 74990. Time to find out if you should spend your money on it.
Dell G5 15 SE (5505) design
The Dell G5 15 SE (5505) looks great with this Supernova silver, which has rainbow dots on the hood and a gray panel on the bottom. It’s a very thick laptop that’s around 21.6mm thick, and heavy as well, with an initial weight of around 2.5kg. Most of the exterior panels are plastic, but everything is assembled well, which makes this laptop sturdy.
There are two cooling fans located on either side of the rear to vent the hot air. The Dell G5 15 SE (5505) offers a convenient set of ports, including a USB Type-C port, USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A, two USB 2.0 ports, a full-size HDMI port, a Mini-DisplayPort, Ethernet, a connector for headphones and a full-size SD card slot. I’m especially pleased to see Dell include the card slot, which is often lacking in gaming laptops. All ports are well spaced on both sides of the laptop.
Turning the lid, we are greeted by a 15.6-inch HD LCD screen (1920 x 1080). The screen has an anti-reflective coating, but the brightness level isn’t too high at just 220 nits. The left and right edges are quite thin, but the top and bottom edges are not.
The screen and keyboard are black, which contrasts very well with the exterior. The Dell G5 15 SE has a full-size chiclet keyboard with a number pad. The palm areas are equally spacious, with a decent-sized trackpad. The feedback on the keys is good, it’s not very loud, and it will have a multi-level red backlight. The bottom corner of the trackpad acts as the left and right mouse buttons, and the haptic feedback is good.
The Dell G5 15 SE has bottom-firing stereo speakers with customizable Nahimic software. There are many vents at the bottom for air intake, but there is no quick-release compartment for accessing RAM or storage. To do this, you will need to remove the entire bottom panel, which is held in place by easily accessible screws.
Dell G5 15 SE (5505) pricing and specifications
Dell G5 15 SE (5505) is available with AMD Ryzen 5 4600H or Ryzen 7 4800H CPU. This new series was launched in March and is based on AMD 7nm process. The laptop also features a discrete AMD Radeon RX 5600M graphics card with 6GB of GDDR6 RAM. You can get a 512GB M.2 PCIe SSD no matter which one you choose. Dell also offers up to 16GB of DDR4 RAM in the high-end option. The variants that debuted in India in July only had 60Hz displays, but the ones being sold online include 120Hz refresh rate display options.
The laptop also has a Killer Wireless 1650x Wi-Fi 6 module, with Bluetooth 5.1. The Dell G5 15 SE (5505) comes with a 51 Whr non-removable battery. The included 240W power adapter is very heavy and bulky.
The variant I’m reviewing today includes a Ryzen 7 4800H CPU, 8 GB of RAM and a 60 Hz screen, and it’s priced at Rs. 86990. Not all of the different configurations are listed on the Dell website, at least at the time of this review, but they can be found on Flipkart. The Ryzen 5 variant, with 8 GB of RAM and a 120 Hz screen, is priced at Rs. 79990. High-end variants with Ryzen 7 CPU and 120 Hz display at 90,990 with 8 GB of RAM or Rs. 96990 with 16 GB of RAM.
Dell G5 15 SE (5505) comes with Windows 10 Home Edition along with Dell’s usual tools and Alienware Command Center software. This allows you to control the temperature of the CPU, GPU, and system. There is a Game-Shift or G mod button (F7 key) that allows you to increase the fan speed to make the device run faster for longer when needed.
